About Project 39A
Project 39A is an integral part of NLU Delhi, focusing on research and pro bono litigation related to the criminal justice system in India. Inspired by Article 39-A of the Indian Constitution, Project 39A uses empirical research to re-examine the criminal justice system. The project aims to trigger new conversations on legal aid, torture, forensics, mental health, criminal law, and the death penalty.
About the Project 39A Internship
Project 39A is dedicated to developing a robust and rewarding internship program that provides meaningful exposure to the complexities and nuances of the criminal justice system in India. The second internship policy will accept interns on a rolling basis from March 2024 to March 2025.
Areas of Work in Project 39A Internship
The different kinds of work undertaken include:
Research: Emphasis on fieldwork and empirical analysis on various aspects such as:
- Forensic science, particularly DNA forensics
- Legal aid in the criminal justice system
- Mental health and criminal justice
- Torture
- Administration of the death penalty
Litigation: Providing competent pro bono legal representation for prisoners sentenced to death in various parts of India, irrespective of the crime.
Eligibility
The internship is open to students in India and other countries, enrolled in recognized undergraduate or postgraduate programs in:
- Law
- Humanities
- Social sciences
- Management
- Media and communications
Students enrolled in other programs may apply, but preference will be given to those in the above-listed fields.
Responsibilities
Interns will be involved in tasks such as assisting with litigation activities, research projects, or public outreach initiatives. While the organization will consider the interests expressed by the interns, it reserves the right to allocate tasks as per its requirements. Interns will also be expected to assist in administrative matters and observe the working hours of Project 39A from its offices.
Duration
Internships are full-time, ranging from a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks. Part-time internships may be considered, but there is a strong preference for full-time interns. Part-time interns must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks. Candidates must specify the exact dates in their application.
Location
Interns will be based at the NLU Delhi campus offices in Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi 100078.
Stipend
- Full-time interns: Rs 10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand Only) for every four weeks of internship.
- Part-time interns: Rs 5,000/- (Rupees Five Thousand Only) for every four weeks of internship.
Application Deadline
Applications must be submitted at least 6 weeks before the proposed start date of the internship. For example, if the proposed start date is August 15, the application should be submitted by June 30.
