On July 1, 2024, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched the Swachhta Pakhwada-2024 at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi. The event, which marks the beginning of a fortnight dedicated to cleanliness and hygiene, was graced by the presence of Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Suresh Gopi, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, and Shri Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. The Swachhta Pledge was administered by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri to all senior officers and staff, reinforcing the Ministry's dedication to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.


The Swachhta Pledge

The ceremony began with the administration of the Swachhta Pledge by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. This pledge is a symbolic yet powerful commitment by the Ministry's officers and staff to uphold cleanliness and hygiene in their daily lives and work environments. The Swachhta Pledge is a key component of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility in achieving collective cleanliness.


Address by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri

In his address, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the significance of the Swachhta Pakhwada initiative within the broader framework of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He described the campaign as the most transformative initiative under the Prime Minister’s leadership, bringing about a fundamental change in the mindset of the Indian populace towards cleanliness and hygiene.

Shri Puri emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to promoting cleanliness practices across all departments. He stressed the active involvement of all stakeholders, including Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) and attached offices under the Ministry, in ensuring the success of the Swachhta Pakhwada.


Achievements of Swachhta Pakhwada 2023

Reflecting on the achievements of the previous year’s Swachhta Pakhwada, Shri Puri noted several significant activities undertaken between July 1 and July 15, 2023. These included the construction of sanitation facilities, installation of hygiene infrastructure, and cleanliness drives in public spaces and offices. The Minister emphasized that these efforts were aimed at demonstrating the Ministry's commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG-6), which focuses on clean water and sanitation for all.


The Success of Swachh Bharat Mission

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri took the opportunity to celebrate the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission, which has been a transformative initiative over the past nine years. He highlighted several key achievements:

  • Construction of Toilets: Almost 12 crore toilets have been constructed across rural and urban India, significantly reducing open defecation and improving sanitation facilities.
  • Solid Waste Management: There have been significant improvements in solid waste management, with the urban areas achieving an impressive 77% efficiency in managing solid waste, up from almost non-existent levels at the mission’s inception.
  • Health and Hygiene Impact: The overall impact on health and hygiene practices has been profound. According to the United Nations, households have saved up to Rs. 50,000 annually due to better health and hygiene practices from the Swachh Bharat Mission.


Continued Commitment to Cleanliness

Shri Puri stressed the need for continued commitment to cleanliness, highlighting the importance of making cities garbage-free and remediating all legacy dumpsites through the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0). This next phase of the mission aims to build on the successes of the past nine years and address the remaining challenges in urban sanitation and waste management.


Launch of Swachhta Pakhwada-2024

The Swachhta Pakhwada-2024 was formally inaugurated with the opening ceremony held at Shastri Bhawan. The initiative will run from July 1 to July 15, 2024, and will involve a series of activities aimed at promoting cleanliness and hygiene practices. These activities will include:

  • Cleanliness Drives: Extensive cleanliness drives in public spaces, offices, and residential areas to ensure that all spaces are clean and hygienic.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene, encouraging individuals to adopt these practices in their daily lives.
  • Sanitation Infrastructure: Construction and maintenance of sanitation facilities to ensure that all individuals have access to clean and hygienic toilets.
  • Waste Management: Initiatives to improve solid waste management practices, including door-to-door waste collection and proper waste disposal.


Role of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs)

Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) and attached offices under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will play a crucial role in the success of Swachhta Pakhwada-2024. These entities will actively participate in the cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns, and other activities organized as part of the initiative. Their involvement is essential in ensuring that the goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are achieved.
