UPSC Takes Action
In a significant move, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has halted the selection of trainee IAS officer Pooja Khedkar. Khedkar, who has been in the news recently, allegedly secured her position through fraudulent means. Following this, she continued to make unauthorized demands and misuse resources.
Status of Selection
At the time of the investigation, Khedkar was still a trainee IAS officer undergoing training. She had not yet secured her job permanently. Despite this, she was behaving as if she were a high-ranking officer, making demands for official residences and vehicles. The UPSC has now responded to the growing scrutiny by issuing a notice to Khedkar to report back to the IAS Academy in Mussoorie.
UPSC's Response and Investigation
The UPSC has released an official statement indicating that they have issued a notice to Pooja Khedkar, asking her to explain why her selection should not be canceled. This marks the beginning of a formal process to potentially terminate her candidacy. The commission's investigation revealed that Khedkar attempted to fake a disability to misuse the quota system, falsifying her identity and credentials to secure a rank and selection in the IAS.
Maharashtra Government's Inquiry
In addition to the UPSC's investigation, the Maharashtra government has conducted its own inquiry. A report submitted to the central government highlighted that Khedkar misused the OBC status, which she was not entitled to, given her father's net worth of 40 crores. The report also detailed other fraudulent activities, including falsifying medical reports and identity documents.
Criminal Proceedings
The UPSC has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Pooja Khedkar, initiating criminal proceedings. Additionally, the Maharashtra government has reported the matter to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and a one-member committee headed by Manoj Dwivedi, Additional Secretary in the DoPT, is conducting further investigations.
Family Involvement and Arrests
The investigations have also implicated Khedkar's parents. Her mother, Manorama Khedkar, was recently arrested after videos surfaced showing her threatening farmers with a gun. Her father, Dilip Khedkar, is facing serious allegations of corruption and extortion, with over 300 complaints lodged against him by small businessmen.
UPSC's Commitment to Integrity
In its defense, the UPSC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the selection process, stating that all exams and selections are conducted as per the constitutional mandate to ensure deserving candidates are selected.
The UPSC's action against Pooja Khedkar underscores the commission's efforts to uphold the integrity of its selection process. Further investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
