Captain Hari Navigates Historic Arrival of First Container Ship at Vizhinjam Port

The recent docking of the first container ship at Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) marks a significant milestone for Kerala, showcasing the state’s growing prominence in maritime trade. Captain GN Hari, a native of Thrikkannapuram in Thiruvananthapuram, played a pivotal role as the Safety and Quality Manager of the cargo vessel ‘San Fernando.’ This 300-meter-long ship, originating from China, represents India’s largest transhipment port’s entry into global trade.

Captain Hari’s journey to Vizhinjam was marked by meticulous planning and quick decision-making. “It was last Sunday I received instructions to head to Vizhinjam. I was tasked with navigating a port without seeing any ships anchor. I needed to make swift decisions based on the situation. We quickly gathered all the necessary information about the port, the breakwater channel, and the weather conditions. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, and the favourable weather, with calm winds and no rain, supported our voyage," Capt. Hari shared with Manorama.

Upon its arrival, the ‘San Fernando’ received a water salute from four tugs, guiding it to the dock. The vessel, operated by a Singapore-based company, carries over 6,700 containers and will offload 1,900 at Vizhinjam before departing the Kerala coast.

The Vizhinjam port project, promoted by the Kerala government in partnership with the Adani Group through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, signifies a major leap in India’s port infrastructure. The total investment for the port amounts to Rs 8,867 crore, with the state government and central government contributing Rs 5,595 crore and Rs 818 crore respectively. Vizhinjam, equipped with modern tools, advanced automation, and IT systems, is set to become India’s first semi-automated port, with full commissioning expected by September or October 2024.

Captain Hari’s successful navigation of an untested port underscores the meticulous preparation and execution behind this historic event. The exceptional preparations at Vizhinjam port and the seamless arrival of the ‘San Fernando’ highlight the port’s potential to become a key player in global maritime trade. As the port gears up for full operations, Kerala stands poised to reap significant economic benefits from this monumental project, enhancing its position on the global trade map.
