As monsoon rains continue to drench various parts of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for regions in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Goa for today, July 16. This alert signifies that these areas are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day.
Maharashtra Braces for Severe Weather
In Maharashtra, the IMD has issued a red alert specifically for the Raigad district, while Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur are under an orange alert. The Kamwari River in Thane's Bhiwandi area has already overflowed, causing water to seep into homes and displace residents in coastal regions. Localities such as Sultania Gali are facing knee-deep water, leading to significant disruptions.
Kerala Faces Intense Rainfall
Kerala is also on high alert, with red alerts issued for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. Additionally, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts are under an orange alert. The state is preparing for more than 20 cm of rainfall in the coming days, which could lead to flooding and other hazards.
Goa and Coastal Karnataka Not Spared
The IMD's warnings extend to Goa and coastal Karnataka as well. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to lash these regions, with the southern interior and coastal areas of Karnataka also under a red alert. Villages such as Araga, Chendia, Iduru, and Toduru have already experienced severe flooding, and thunderstorms have uprooted trees and electric poles in the Kodagu district.
Monsoon Shifts and Ongoing Impact
According to IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar, the monsoon is now shifting downward, contributing to the heavy rains expected in coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa. He emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that these areas could see over 20 cm of rainfall. Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR will experience light to moderate rains over the next six days, which could lead to traffic congestion and inconvenience for commuters, though no alerts have been issued for the region.
Widespread Effects Across India
Several states across India have been grappling with heavy rains for the past several days, leading to flooding, displacement, and the loss of lives and property. The IMD's alerts serve as a crucial warning for residents to prepare for the severe weather conditions ahead and take necessary precautions.
As the monsoon continues to impact the country, it is essential to stay informed and heed the warnings issued by the IMD. Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant and prioritize their safety during this period of intense rainfall.
