As the monsoon season continues, Kerala is set to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until August 3, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Red alerts have been issued for eight districts, with predictions of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours. The affected districts are Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Rainfall: Heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours
In response to the heavy rainfall forecasts, educational institutions in 12 districts will remain closed on July 31. These districts include Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta. The Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam and the University of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram have postponed all exams scheduled for Wednesday. Additionally, all Public Service Commission (PSC) exams scheduled until Friday have been postponed.
The IMD has forecast squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, along the Kerala coast until July 31. Most parts of the state can expect rain accompanied by thundershowers until August 5.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a high wave alert for the Kerala coast, predicting waves between 2.1 to 2.7 meters until 11.30 pm on Wednesday. This alert extends to the coasts of Lakshadweep, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid venturing into flooded areas. Those living in low-lying areas should stay alert and be prepared to move to safer locations if needed. Fishermen are advised against going out to sea due to the rough weather and high waves.
