The Accident
The incident occurred early on Sunday morning at approximately 5:30 AM. Kaveri Nakhwa and her husband, Pradeep, were returning home after buying fish when their two-wheeler was struck by a BMW. The car was allegedly driven by Mihir Shah, the son of Rajesh Shah, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde.
Immediate Aftermath
In the aftermath of the accident, the Mumbai police have arrested around 12 individuals, including Mihir Shah's mother and his two sisters, who are suspected of attempting to protect him. Rajesh Shah was arrested on Monday, and the police are currently deliberating whether to list the three women as accused. The final decision will rest with the authorities.
Medical Response and Fatality
According to police reports, Kaveri Nakhwa was immediately taken to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Her husband, Pradeep, survived the incident. The police formed multiple teams to track down Mihir Shah, who was eventually apprehended 72 hours later in an apartment in Virar, approximately 65 kilometers from Mumbai.
Family's Heartbreak and Doubts About Justice
Pradeep has expressed his skepticism about receiving justice, citing their financial constraints. He questioned why Mihir Shah was in hiding if he had done nothing wrong. Pradeep’s sentiments echo a common concern in India, where drunk driving incidents are prevalent. Even at high speeds, a sober driver might control the vehicle, but under the influence of alcohol, drivers often lose control, leading to fatal accidents.
Sequence of Events
The sequence of events, as revealed by the police, shows that Mihir Shah left his home on Saturday night and went to Wise Global Tapas Bar, where he partied with friends. Around 1:15 AM on Sunday, he asked his driver, Bidawat, to take him to Marine Drive. The two switched seats, with Mihir Shah driving. At approximately 5:30 AM, Mihir Shah allegedly hit the Nakhwas' two-wheeler.
Horrific Details of the Incident
The most horrifying aspect of the incident is that after hitting the couple, the car continued for about a kilometer with Kaveri Nakhwa trapped underneath. After a kilometer, Mihir Shah and Bidawat switched seats again and left Kaveri’s body on the road. Bidawat is also accused of being aware of the incident but continuing to drive.
Pradeep's Pursuit and Tragic Realization
Pradeep chased the car for about half a kilometer but could not locate his wife’s body. He believes that if the car had stopped immediately after the collision, his wife might have survived.
Official Response and Public Outrage
Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has assured that the law is equal for everyone and that justice will be served. However, skepticism remains due to past experiences with similar cases in the country. The case highlights the struggles faced by the poor in seeking justice and has sparked widespread outrage. The city and the nation await the outcome of this case, hoping for a fair resolution.
