WHY TRUMP EVEN AFTER SO MANY ALLEGATIONS ??

The first presidential debate of the 2024 American election season took place on June 28, featuring President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The 75-minute debate saw Trump declared the winner by major American media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the host of the debate, CNN.

Media Reactions and Democratic Concerns

New York Times reported that President Biden’s performance led to significant concerns within the Democratic Party. Some party members are now questioning Biden’s viability as a candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Historical Context of Presidential Debates

The tradition of presidential debates in the United States has a rich history, tracing back to the Senate elections of 1858 in Illinois. The debates between Abraham Lincoln of the Republican Party and Stephen Douglas of the Northern Democrats were pivotal. Lincoln, ready for the challenge, accepted Douglas’s call for a debate, marking the significance of public discourse in American politics.

The first official presidential debate, however, did not occur until 1960, a full 102 years later, setting the stage for modern political debates.

Understanding Presidential Debates

Presidential debates in the United States are forums where candidates discuss important issues before the election. These debates play a crucial role in shaping voters’ opinions about the candidates.

Four Parameters for Deciding Victory or Defeat

  1. Media and Opinion: News channels and politicians analyze the candidates' performances, assessing the accuracy of their answers and their body language to declare a winner.

  2. Opinion Polls: Conducted by news channels and survey agencies, these polls gather audience opinions on who won the debate.

  3. Social Media: Public reactions on social media platforms also determine the debate's winner.

  4. Voting in Person: Agencies conduct in-person surveys to understand if the debate influenced voters' decisions. The candidate who sways the most voters is deemed the winner.

Evolution of Debate Rules

  • 1960 to 1988: Candidates answered questions from a panel of journalists, with the moderator explaining the rules. This format often distracted the candidates and took up considerable time.

  • 1992: The panel system was removed, and debates began featuring only three candidates.

  • 1996: The three-candidate system was eliminated, and moderators were responsible for asking questions.

Candidate Placement During Debates

A coin toss determines the standing positions of the candidates. The winner can choose either their preferred side of the stage or the option to deliver the closing remarks. In this debate, Biden won the coin toss and chose the left side of the stage, which appeared on the right side of television screens. Historians note that viewers tend to focus more on the right side, potentially giving Biden an advantage in capturing audience attention. Consequently, Trump had the opportunity to deliver the closing statement.

Key Issues Discussed

Foreign Policy

  • Trump’s Assertion: Trump accused Biden of bringing destruction worldwide.
  • Question: Will the US cease fighting only if it relinquishes claims on certain areas, as Putin suggests?

Drugs

  • Trump’s Claim: Trump alleged that Biden receives money from China.

  • Question: During both of your tenures, drug-related deaths have increased. What will you do to combat drug addiction and provide treatment?

    • Trump’s Answer: Trump blamed the increase in drug-related deaths on Biden's tenure, reiterating the claim that Biden receives money from China.

Debate Outcome

According to a CNN poll aired after the debate, 67% of viewers believed that Trump won, while 33% thought Biden was the winner. This significant margin has set the stage for the upcoming election, with both candidates preparing for the next phase of their campaigns.
