Will Paris able to solve poop protest ?

The organisers of the Paris Olympic Games are planning ambitious triathlon and marathon swimming competitions on the historic Seine River. The author is worried that only a month is left in the event and the water of this river is still not ready for swimming competitions. In fact, the Seine River has been facing the problem of filth for a century. In 1923, public swimming was banned here due to poor water quality. This is the first time since then that a multinational water sports event will be held on this historic river. Public swimming in the Seine river has been banned for over 100 years due to polluted water.

The local administration of Paris is spending money like water in cleaning the river. So far (Jun 26,2024), about 11.68 thousand crores have been spent. To prevent sewage from flowing into the Seine River, money is being spent on unique pumps and so-called catch basins.

After the rain, the river's water is unsuitable for swimming for several days. The overflow of the sewer increases the risk of animal excreta flowing out. This also includes the excreta of dogs and cats. Heavy rains in Paris usually occur four or five times a year. Organisers hope this will be okay during the summer season in July and August.

According to a report by France 24, test results of river water showed that levels of E. coli – a bacteria that causes fecal contamination – were more than twice as high as the levels in Olympic swimming events during the week of June 10-16.

What are the people of Paris angry about?

The people of Paris are angry that despite spending so much money on the cleaning campaign, the river's water is still as bad as before. While other social issues were ignored because of the cleaning of the river. The residents of Paris have had to face an increase in the cost of transportation due to the Olympic Games. Before the games, the administration had cleared the homeless slums, due to which people are accusing the government of trying to 'hide the poverty' of France. People, angry at the poor administration and the cost of cleaning the river, have started a campaign under #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin, which means 'I will shit in the Seine on 23 June'. Here shit means defecation by people. Paris Mayor Anne Hilgo was going to dip in the Seine river on 23 June. However, due to the dirt in the river, it has been postponed for now. She had vowed that she would send a message by swimming in this river before the two games that the water of the Seine is clean and safe for the Olympic athletes. But now she has said that she will not dip until after the French elections in July. President Emmanuel Macron has also promised to swim in the Seine before the Games, but the author has not given a date.

What happens to the outdoor swimming events if they can't use the Seine?

If the Seine needs to be cleaner for the athletes, the triathlon will drop the swimming portion and run as a duathlon. The marathon swimming competition would be moved to the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, just outside Paris, hosting the rowing and canoe-kayaking events.

If it is impossible to do so due to security or any other reason, the organizers have also kept the option of holding the opening ceremony at the Stade de France.
