‘You are a woman... you don’t know anything’: Nitish Kumar shouts in the Parliament.

In a heated session of the Bihar Assembly on July 24, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar lost his temper and directed sharp remarks at Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Rekha Devi. The Chief Minister was addressing the House on the subject of reservation and the proposed 65% quota hike, a decision that had been recently set aside by the Patna High Court. In response, the State government had approached the Supreme Court and had urged the Centre to include the reservation in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

During his speech, Kumar assured the Assembly that measures were being taken to ensure the implementation of the quota hike. However, members of the Opposition, including the RJD, the Congress, and the Left, continued to create a commotion. They entered the well of the House, shouting slogans and demanding Special Category Status for Bihar, as well as criticizing the State government for not including the reservation in the Ninth Schedule.

"The Patna High Court has set aside the quota hike, and we have gone to the Supreme Court. We have also informed the Centre to include it in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution," Kumar stated. Despite these assurances, the Opposition's sloganeering persisted.

In a moment of frustration, Kumar pointed his finger at Rekha Devi, the Masaurhi MLA, and rebuked her, saying, "You are a woman, don't you understand? These people never let women progress. You are a woman, you don't know anything." He further criticized the RJD's past governance, asking if women were ever allowed to speak during their rule. "Did RJD ever promote women? After 2005, I promoted women. Today you are speaking useless things. Listen to what I am saying," he added.

Kumar also accused the Congress of hypocrisy, pointing out that during the UPA government's tenure, the party did not grant Special Category Status to Bihar but now demands it in the Assembly. "Yesterday, you were protesting, but when we were protesting since 2010 that Bihar should get Special Category Status, then your party did not give it. You people (RJD and Congress) were together," he remarked.

He defended his administration by noting that the Centre had begun aiding Bihar following his requests, allocating ₹58,900 crore to the State in the Union Budget. Despite this, the Opposition continued to create a ruckus, chanting "Nitish Kumar hai hai (down with Nitish Kumar)," which provoked Kumar to angrily retort the same slogan back at them.

In response to Kumar's comments, Rekha Devi expressed her dismay, stating, "I was just speaking my thoughts on reservation. On one hand, the Chief Minister talks about women empowerment, and on the other hand, he speaks like this to women." She demanded an apology from the Chief Minister, referencing previous controversial statements he had made about women and population issues. "Everyone knows what statements he made on women regarding the population issue. The Chief Minister should express regret. He has grown old and is not able to run Bihar," she asserted.

The confrontation highlighted the ongoing tensions within the Bihar Assembly and underscored the complex dynamics of gender and political power in the State's governance.
