Laser weapon seen on Chinese warship for the first time According to a report by The War Zone, China has so far used most of its laser weapons on land. This is the first time its deployment has been seen on a warship. A picture that surfaced on social media recently shows a new laser weapon on the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN) Type 071 Amphibious Assault Ship. The ship has reportedly just come out of a refit. The system is installed just behind the 76-mm gun on the ship's bow. When not in use, the weapon is hidden under a large dome-shaped cover.
How powerful is China's Type 071 ship?
Until the Type 075 Landing Helicopter Dock was built, the Type 071 was the largest amphibious warship of the Chinese Navy. The Type 071 is a warship with a displacement of about 25,000 tons. It also has a small flight deck. Apart from this, this warship also has hangar space for four Z-8 heavy transport helicopters. It also has four air-conditioned landing craft, about 60 armored fighting vehicles and a capacity of 800 soldiers. It is similar to the US Navy's San Antonio (LPD-17) class warship. According to reports, the Type 071 ship has been chosen as a testing platform for laser weapons. If the test is successful, the laser weapon can be deployed on other warships as well.
Chinese laser weapon seems to be a copy of America
The Chinese laser weapon looks very similar to the laser weapon used by the US Navy. The US Navy has deployed laser weapons on the San Antonio class landing platform dock USS Portland. It was first seen in late 2019. In May 2020, USS Portland also claimed to have successfully shot down a small drone through its laser weapon. The laser weapon on the USS Portland is formally known as the Laser Weapon System Demonstrator (LWSD) Mk 2 Mod 0 and was developed by Northrop Grumman.

But its range is 5 kilometers. Laser experts said that first its range has to be increased. In the year 2017, DRDO installed a 1 kilowatt laser system on a truck. It was tested in Chitradurga. Its laser went up to 250 meters. The problem was to give so much power to the laser system that its range increases.
