IIT-Madras Tops NIRF 2024 Rankings for Eighth Consecutive Year



IIT-Madras Reigns Supreme

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has once again been recognized as the leading institution in India, securing the top position in both the overall and engineering categories in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024. This achievement marks the eighth consecutive year that IIT-Madras has maintained its top spot in engineering.

IITs Dominate the Top Ranks

Following IIT-Madras in the overall rankings, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore clinched the second position. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) continued their dominance, with IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur securing the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively. Additionally, IIT Kharagpur ranked sixth, AIIMS Delhi took the seventh spot, while IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati were placed eighth and ninth. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) completed the top 10 by securing the tenth position.

New Categories Introduced in NIRF 2024

This year’s NIRF rankings, now in their ninth edition, saw the introduction of three new categories: 'open universities,' 'skill universities,' and 'state-funded government universities.' Additionally, Anil Sahasrabudhe, AICTE chairperson, announced the Ministry's plans to launch 'sustainability rankings' starting next year.

Notable University and College Rankings

  • Jamia Millia Islamia retained the third position in the University Category for the third consecutive year.
  • Jamia Hamdard emerged as the top university for pharmacy.
  • IIM Ahmedabad was ranked as the best business school in India, with two IITs also featuring in the top 10 for management courses.
  • AIIMS Delhi maintained its top position for medical studies.
  • IIT Roorkee was recognized as the leading institution for architecture courses.
