Tamil Nadu Judicial Service Examination



The Tamil Nadu Judiciary Exam is a prestigious examination managed by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) for appointing judges to the Tamil Nadu Judicial Service. It is highly competitive and consists of three stages: 

  - the Preliminary Exam

  - the Main Exam

  - the viva voce (interview)

The selection process can extend over a year, evaluating candidates on their legal knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and skill in applying laws effectively.

Preliminary Examination- Objective Questions/ MCQ Based

  • The Preliminary Examination will consist of one paper containing 100 multiple-choice questions.

  • Each question shall carry one mark, and 0.25 will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

  • The duration of the Preliminary Examination will be three hours.

Mains Examination

There will be four descriptive papers.

Translation Paper - 3 hours - 100 Marks

  • Law Paper-I - 3 hours - 100 Marks

  • Law Paper-ll - 3 hours - 100 Marks

  • Law Paper-Ill - 3 hours - 100 Marks

Personal Interview

Viva-voce test shall be for sixty (60) marks, and candidates of all categories should obtain a minimum of 18 marks to pass in the Viva-voce

The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973

The Indian Penal Code, 1860

The Indian Evidence Act, 1872

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Acts

The Criminal Minor Acts (including Information Technology Act, 2000; The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012).


PART-C

General Knowledge (Degree standard)

Test of Reasoning and Mental ability (S.S.L.C. standard).


MAINS EXAMINATION 

Translation

Translation of passages from English to Tamil and from Tamil to English.

The passages will be from Pleadings, Depositions, Orders, Judgments and Documents.

INTERVIEW 

The interview aims to determine if the candidate is well-suited for the position by evaluating their mental sharpness, general knowledge, understanding of legal principles and procedural laws, clarity of thought and expression, judgment, skills, attitude, ethics, comprehension and communication abilities, character, suitability, intellectual depth, tactfulness, and capability to manage various situations in court. Candidates should have a thorough grasp of the subjects from the Preliminary and Main exams, as there is no specific syllabus for the interview stage.
