How FDA- approved eye drops could replace your reading glasses ?
Mumbai-based Entod Pharmaceuticals has announced that the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) — the country’s apex drug regulator — has approved its new eye drop, which has been “specifically developed to reduce dependency on reading glasses for individuals affected by presbyopia.”
According to the company, the eye drop PresVu is the first of its kind in India, and that Entod has “applied for a patent for this invention in terms of its formulation and the process”.

Enhances Near Vision In 15 minutes'
Highlighting the benefits of PresVu for patients, Dr Aditya Sethi noted that Presbyopia has long been treated with reading glasses, contact lenses and surgical measures. With PresVu, it can be treated effectively as the eye drop improves near vision within 15 minutes.
The latest treatment can significantly improve the quality of life for many people, allowing them to perform everyday tasks easily, he stated.
The doctor further noted that it was important to monitor symptoms and consult a doctor if blurred near vision interferes with reading or other activities.
Commenting on the clinical potential of PresVu, Dr Dhananjay Bakhle said its approval was a promising achievement in the field of ophthalmology.

What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a common age-related condition where the eye's ability to focus on close objects diminishes. This occurs because the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible over time, making it harder to adjust focus for near vision.
Typically, people start noticing presbyopia in their early to mid-40s. Symptoms include difficulty reading small print, needing to hold reading materials at arm's length, and experiencing eye strain when doing close work. It's a natural part of aging and can be corrected

Causes:
• Lens Hardening: The lens inside the eye becomes stiffer and  less flexible over time.
• Decreased Accommodation: The eye’s ability to change the shape of the lens to focus on near objects diminishes.

Symptoms:
• Difficulty Reading Small Print: Text or details up close become blurry.
• Holding Items at Arm's Length: To see clearly, people often extend their arms to increase the distance between their eyes and the reading material.
• Eye Strain: Prolonged close work can lead to discomfort or headaches.

Global Impact and Future Plans:
Presbyopia affects between 1.09 and 1.8 billion people worldwide, making it a widespread issue as people age, leading to a decreased ability to focus on nearby objects. Entod Pharmaceuticals aims to address this issue not only in India but also in emerging markets such as Africa and Southeast Asia.

How does PresVu work?
The active ingredient in PresVu — a chemical compound in medicines that has an effect on the body — is pilocapine. This compound contracts the iris muscles, which control the shape of the pupil and help with clear vision. As a result, the eyes are able to focus better on nearby objects. The company also said that PresVu uses "advanced dynamic buffer technology"—essentially a base solution—that adjusts to the surrounding pH level (a measure of how acidic or alkalinity a substance is). This ensures the eye drops have "consistent effectiveness and

PresVu: New Formulation and Benefits
The manufacturers have applied for a patent for this specific formulation and its manufacturing process.

The eye drops feature advanced Dynamic Buffer Technology, which rapidly adapts to the pH of tears, ensuring consistent efficacy and safety for long-term use. This feature is particularly important since these drops can be used for many years.

Dr. N.Jay Bakhle, MD, commented on the clinical prospects of PresVu, saying,

“ approval of PresVu represents a promising development in ophthalmology. For patients with presbyopia, this eye drop provides a non-invasive option that can improve near vision without the need for reading glasses.”
